While warriors are equipped for battle, an underlying longing for and appreciation of security is present within them. In today’s world, just about any news report assaults our senses and stirs up within us a strong desire for security and deliverance from this present evil abounding in our nation as well as an intense desire to know how to respond in a way that honors and serves God. What a relief it is to read Proverbs 2, a chapter titled “The Pursuit of Wisdom Brings Security” in my favorite study Bible.
How are we warriors to pursue wisdom? King Solomon tells us:
Proverbs 2:2-7a (NLT) “Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight [discernment], and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest…”
Actively, that is how we pursue wisdom! We choose to tune in, to concentrate, to cry out, to ask, to search diligently. Then, we understand fearing the LORD [revering, being in awe of His holiness] and gain knowledge of Him – we have a relationship with Him where He is constantly revealing to us His nature and purposes. And, He gives us wisdom and a treasure trove of common sense! Hallelujah!
The Lord Himself is also a shield to protect His warriors. I love living under the covering of His wings, knowing that He guards my way and protects me, especially when I am persevering through trials of life in our fallen world.
Proverbs 2:7b-8 (NLT) “… He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to Him.”
What is the result of our choice to actively pursue wisdom, to choose to pursue a deeper and more intimate relationship with the Sovereign Lord?
Proverbs 2:10-12 (NAS) “For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will guard you, understanding will watch over you, to deliver you from the way of evil.“
The results are: hearts of wisdom, souls enriched by knowledge, bodies guarded by discretion, minds enhanced with understanding, and you delivered from evil – security! Warrior of Christ, surely these are worth the pursuit.
