Shoes of Peace

What is most important to you about your shoes? You may be concerned mostly with comfort. After all, who wants to have aching feet at the end of a long and busy day. Perhaps, wearing a fashionable shoe rates high on your list. Who cares about comfort, you want to look sharp! Maybe, you see your shoe as a piece of equipment that serves a vital function (like steel-toed boots for workmen) so the way it looks doesn’t matter.

Roman soldiers in the early days of the Church wanted protection and ease of movement. Thus, they wore open-weave leather sandals with hobnails on the bottom for tread and with straps to wrap around their ankles to secure them (or possibly with longer leather straps and solid pieces of leather attached to guard their shins or calves) – cool, lightweight and ground-gripping for comfort and speed in battle and, possibly, with the extra protection around their lower legs. The shoes we should opt for as warriors for Christ look a little different.

The Apostle Paul thought it was critical for Christ’s warriors to be fully prepared for battle, which included walking in peace that comes from the Good News. What is the Good News? It is the gospel of Christ, the message of salvation made possible through Christ’s sinless life, death and resurrection which offers us the possibility of a restored relationship with the Father. Paul said…

Romans 1:16 (NLT) “For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes – the Jew first and also the Gentile.”

And, where do we get this peace that comes from the Good News? It is Jesus’ peace that He left for us when He returned to Heaven to sit at the right hand of God (Mark 14:62) and to intercede for us as our High Priest (Hebrews 7:25) and our righteousness (Romans 5:18).

John 14:27 (TPT) “I leave the gift of peace with you – my peace. Not the kind of fragile peace given by the world, but my perfect peace. Don’t yield to fear or be troubled in your hearts – instead, be courageous!”

Honestly, warrior, that sounds like a mighty powerful gift that we should want! Imagine, living day in and day out in perfect peace, not afraid but courageous no matter what the Enemy throws at us. Not only would we experience that peace for ourselves, but, since we are walking in it, we would take that peace everywhere we go and to everyone we meet. Why? Being “fully prepared” by putting on Christ’s peace, we cannot be shaken by things of this world and are able to stand our ground and to resist the Enemy. I know that is something I need for living each day. What about you, warrior?

Ephesians 6:13-16 (NLT) Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor [breastplate] of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
